Canon’s 70-200mm II/III has long been one of the best lenses in terms of minimal focus breathing at close focus. The new Sigma 70-200mm Sport is right there with the Canon in the sample shots below.

The 70-100mm range is useful for portraits of your kids. I believe the 70-200 is actually sharper than than the 100-400, and has better bokeh. If you do shoot a lot at 400mm, you could use a 2X teleconverter on the 70-200, but the quality is not quite as good as the 100-400 mk II, and the auto-focus will be slower.

The EF 70-200 f2.8 III is my big white. For the OP, I guess it depends on what else he as for lenses. He should have one of the EF 500 f4, the RF 100-500, or the RF 70-200 f2.8 before he buys the 70-200 f4. Depending on his ability to carry the cost and weight.
